Will a Catio Work in a Small UK Garden? Real Options for Terraces, Flats and Patios

One of the most common reasons people talk themselves out of getting a catio is space. They look at their small back yard, their paved patio, or their single-bedroom flat with access to a shared garden, and they assume a catio simply isn't possible.

In the vast majority of cases, that assumption is wrong. You probably have more room than you think - and there are more options than you might realise.

What Is the Minimum Space for a Catio?

The smallest practical catios for a single cat start at around 1.2 to 1.5 metres in length and 0.8 to 1 metre in width. That's roughly the size of a large armchair. If you have a paved area, a small decking section, a strip of garden beside a fence, or access to any outdoor space at all, it's worth measuring before ruling it out.

Vertical height matters too. A catio that's taller gives your cat more usable space through climbing and perching, which effectively multiplies the floor area from a cat's perspective. A compact 1.2m x 1m catio with shelving at multiple heights can be significantly more stimulating than a larger but flat structure.

Catios for Terraced Houses and Back Yards

Terraced houses in the UK often have narrow, paved back yards rather than open lawns. These work perfectly well for a freestanding catio - the structure can sit directly on paving slabs without any groundwork needed.

If your outdoor space is long and narrow, a catio can be positioned along a fence line to make the most of the available length. If it's small and square, a compact wall-mounted option that extends outward from the house can be a better use of the footprint.

Catios for Balconies

Balcony catios are a growing area of interest, particularly among flat owners in cities. A secure balcony enclosure can give an indoor cat genuine outdoor access where a garden simply isn't an option.

Before ordering a balcony catio, there are a few things to check:

•      Weight limits - check the load capacity of your balcony with your building management company if unsure

•      Lease terms - many leases restrict what can be placed on balconies, particularly if it's visible from outside

•      Wind exposure - higher floors are significantly windier and your cat may find this unsettling at first

If your balcony is suitable, even a very modest enclosure can make an enormous difference to a flat-dwelling cat's quality of life.

Catios for Flats With Communal Gardens

If you're in a flat with access to a communal garden, you may be able to install a freestanding catio in an allocated section of the outdoor space. This requires permission from your freeholder or management company - and potentially from other residents depending on the lease structure.

The most persuasive approach is to present it as a self-contained structure that can be removed without trace, doesn't affect drainage or planting, and is positioned in a part of the garden that doesn't inconvenience other residents. A freestanding catio is considerably easier to get approval for than a permanent fixture.

Measuring Your Space in Five Minutes

Before getting in touch or placing an order, it's worth doing a quick measurement of the area you have in mind:

With those measurements in hand, get in touch and we can advise on which options will work for your specific space.

1.   Measure the width of the available area at its narrowest point

2.   Measure the depth (how far from the house or fence the catio could extend)

3.   Note the height available - if there's an overhang, fence, or wall that limits how tall the structure can be

4.   Check the surface - is it level? Slightly sloped ground can usually be accommodated but very uneven ground may need attention first

5.   Note what the catio would back on to - a sunny fence, a shaded wall, open garden

With those measurements in hand, get in touch and we can advise on which options will work for your specific space.
